Organic Champagne

19 April 2024

Organic Champagne is Champagne made from grapes grown according to the principles of organic farming, which excludes the use of synthetic chemicals (such as pesticides and fertilisers) and GMOs.

These vineyards are therefore managed in a way that maintains the natural balance of ecosystems and improves soil and plant health.

Of course, this certification requires compliance with strict standards that are regularly verified by accredited bodies.

But beware, there are three different eco-sustainable methodologies.

THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN ORGANIC, HVE AND SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE

1. Organic farming

Organic farming focuses on the health of the soil and the ecosystem, using techniques that promote biodiversity and reduce environmental impact, completely avoiding the use of synthetic chemicals. This method supports a purer environment and produces wines that faithfully express terroir!

2. Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE)

HVE is a French certificate that goes beyond organic by assessing the overall environmental impact of a farm. HVE farms must demonstrate exceptional practices in terms of biodiversity, water management, and reduced use of chemicals. This certification places a strong emphasis on sustainability at farm level.

3. Sustainable Agriculture

Sustainable agriculture encompasses a wide range of practices that are ecologically balanced, economically feasible and socially just. It does not necessarily eliminate the use of all chemicals but aims to reduce them to a minimum, seeking to balance production with environmental protection.

THE BENEFITS OF ORGANIC CHAMPAGNE

1. More defined aromas

Organic Champagne often displays a richer and more complex taste than non-organic Champagne. Vignerons work in perfect harmony with nature and respect the delicate balance of ecosystems by producing grapes that are authentic expressions of their terroir.

In the absence of synthetic chemicals, the vines are encouraged to root themselves more deeply in the soil, absorbing a richer variety of minerals and nutrients that are reflected in the wine's complex and distinctive aromas. A plus point for both nature and Champagne lovers!

2. Protection of the earth and purity of the product

The organic method protects the earth and creates a product that is a pure expression of its environment. This approach not only supports biodiversity but also offers a Champagne with a distinctive and lively aromatic profile.

"Every single choice we make matters. Every single choice can help determine the kind of world we want to live in," Jane Goodall points out.

CHALLENGES IN ORGANIC CHAMPAGNE PRODUCTION

If organic production is better for Nature and the products it produces, it still represents many difficulties for the Vigneron, requiring more work and attention. Indeed, the climatic conditions in the Champagne region are particularly difficult and organic production poses an extra challenge for the Vigneron who must adopt methods that favour the natural resistance of the vines against pests and diseases, requiring constant commitment and vigilance.

This approach also entails higher costs and potentially lower yields.

However, despite the challenges and sacrifices, for the Vignerons, organic production is more than just an option: it isan indispensable philosophy of life.

Organic Champagne therefore offers a unique experience, not only for its quality but also for its positive impact on the environment!
